Increased Latencies in Some Answers Experiences
Incident Report for Yext
Postmortem

Summary

On November 25, 2020, Yext Answers search experiences that integrated the Yext-managed set of COVID-19 FAQs saw increased latencies from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. ET. During this window, searches on these sites may have taken multiple seconds, and relevant COVID-19 FAQs may have gone missing from some search results.

Root Cause

The Yext-managed set of COVID-19 FAQs is powered by infrastructure that was impacted by the Amazon Kinesis outage that occurred on November 25.

The infrastructure for other parts of Yext Answers was unaffected.

Remediation

We are adding mechanisms that will allow Yext Answers to continue to deliver speedy partial results, even when certain data sources are encountering issues. We are also exploring alternative approaches for the COVID-19 FAQs that will reduce the likelihood that they have issues independent of the rest of Yext Answers.

Monitoring
We have been investigating telemetry that suggests slower than usual performance over the last hour for some search experiences hosted by Yext Answers, particularly those including the Yext-managed set of coronavirus FAQs.

The telemetry suggests performance has now returned to normal, but we are continuing to monitor for any regressions.
